Dil Bekaraar Movie Review

Set in the 80s, ‘Dil Bekraar’ follows the Thakur family from New Delhi’s posh Hailey Road, and the struggles of Vice Chancellor Justice LN Thakur (Raj Babbar) and his wife Mamta (Poonam Dhillon), as well as their five beautiful But troubled daughters – each one unique in their own way.
The eldest, Anjini (Sukhamani Sadana) is married and constantly invents new ways to get attention; Binodini (Anjali Anand), who is solely concerned about her share in the family property; Chandu, who eloped with a foreigner on the eve of their wedding;

Debjani aka Dabboo (Saher Bamba), who has just got a chance to be an English speaking newsreader on DD News (Deshdarpan Channel, the fictionalized version of Doordarshan) and the youngest is Ishwari (Medha Shankar). It is her last year of school and she has no idea what she will do after that. Meanwhile, amidst this domestic chaos is a sweet love story that flourishes between the protagonist, Dabboo, and Dylan Singh Shekhawat (Akshay Oberoi), the son of an investigative journalist and Justice Thakur’s best friend.

Of course, the love story of Dabboo and Dylan is not limited. It also depicts the struggles of the Thakur sisters; Anjini’s failed marriage and her love for her stepson Samar, Binny’s husband’s crashed business, Ishu’s high school love life.

Not to mention the daily shenanigans of his beloved uncle, AN Thakur (Pankaj Kalra), and his wife, Bhudevi Thakur (Padmini Kolhapure), who believes he (her husband) is having an affair with his domestic help, Dulari. And then there’s Gulgul (Aditya Kapadia), their sensitive and soft-spoken son, whom his parents want to see grow into a tough guy.

Directed by Habib Faisal (known for Hindi films like ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ and ‘Ishqzaade’), this 10-part series is much more than just an ongoing love story and a chick-lit drama. In short, however, it is also against the politics that led to the Bhopal gas tragedy.

With a few twists, the screenplay by Suhani Kanwar and Ruchika Roy delivers a multi-layered narrative that incorporates the silliness of 80s romance, family conflict and politics, all of which combine to make the story gripping. The story has its good moments – it is a light and airy watch that is full of wit.

In order to keep the plot of the book from which it is inspired, authentic, the creators have adapted the novel ‘The Price’ by Anuja Chauhan.

All the characters of ‘Thakur Girls’ have kept the same names. The first few episodes take their sweet time keeping different characters. The audience engaged.

But, the second part of the series, which focuses on the Bhopal gas tragedy, slows the pace even further and doesn’t seem natural. Additionally, at the end of each episode some old tunes like ‘Duniya Mein Logon Ko’, ‘Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho‘ and others are used in the background which fits well with the atmosphere of the narrative.

As a journalist who is constantly striving for recognition and, not least, a byline in the newspaper, Akshay Oberoi is impressive. He once told his coworkers that “Video news (TV) is like a colorful cocktail with no substance and lots of entertainment, while print news is like a fine whiskey on the rocks with real news.

This perfectly reflects the passion of his character towards his work. Sahar Bamba, who made her debut in Sunny Deol’s directorial venture Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas, looks stunning in full draped saris. She skillfully played the role of Debjani Thakur, a strong and thoughtful English news reader.

Dabboo and Dylan’s on-screen chemistry epitomizes the spirit of 80s romance.

As veteran Bollywood actors, Raj Babbar, Poonam Dhillon and Padmini Kolhapure play interesting characters that the audience can root for. Padmini Kolhapure’s habit of chewing paan and abusing non-stop can be a bit excessive at times.

Still she convinces Bhudevi. It is a bonus to see these three on screen after such a long time.

Chandrachud Singh’s performance as Health Minister Hardik Motla could have been more impressive, but with so many characters already vying for space, his character could not have been projected properly. The rest of the Thakur sisters are equally inspiring.
